People ask me how I went from cleaning pools to building Spartan across 41 countries.
Most are looking for a quick-fix, overnight success story—a magic pill to make more money, rocket-launch their careers, or bring happiness.
You know the answer because I say it all the time—put in the hard work and success will follow.
But there’s another secret that I want to share. It’s a simple, effective way to build relationships, jumpstart sales, and land massive deals.
Just do good.
Every good deed has a 10x-opportunity attached to it. Here’s how it works:
At the end of the day, we do business with people we like. And one way to make someone like you—to earn someone’s trust and respect—is to help them succeed. Here are some tips.
Share your contacts. There’s no sense in hoarding phone numbers and keeping your address book closed. Sharing contacts and making introductions benefits everyone. Be that connector for people in your network and open up doors. It will come back 10 fold.
Take the meeting. Time is a valuable asset. So, making time for someone—whether it’s in person or over the phone—shows you care about their success on a personal level. When someone asks for a meeting or to schedule a call, just do it. Find 15 minutes in your schedule and make it happen. You never know where it’s going to lead. The most unlikely meetings turn out to be the most rewarding.
Stop saying you’re busy. Look, we’re all “busy.” But there are 24 hours in the day, and I’ll bet my farm that you’re not booked for all of them. Find available blocks and do a free speaking engagement, run workshops for local business owners, or donate your skills and time to someone who needs it without expecting anything in return. You’re not too busy. Period.
Share your knowledge. If you’ve put in the sweat equity to hone your skills and master your craft, it might seem counterintuitive to share what you’ve learned. But teaching your skills to others or sharing your experiences is a selfless way to give people a leg up—to help them avoid mistakes and put what you’ve learned into practice. Sharing knowledge builds community, lifts your personal brand, and fosters goodwill. Don’t miss the opportunity to teach others.

These are words for every person doing business to live by. Over the course of my 30+ year career, I have learned first hand the wisdom of Joe’s rules for doing good. They’re true. Follow them, and success will follow – as will many other positive benefits for yourself and the community at large.
