There is no MBA, book, or podcast that can prepare you for something like this if you’re a business owner. As a business owner myself, it’s important in times like this to stay liquid. Without cash on hand you can’t operate, so figure out what you need to keep liquidity.

Also, you have to step up as a leader. During confusing and dark times, everyone needs guidance. This is what you’re here for. Leading everyone, even when you can’t see the road ahead, is crucial. The unit has to keep marching on, but someone needs to take that first step. As a leader, that someone is you.

Here are three ways that you can step up as a leader.

Eat the Cooking Yourself

You have to make sure you’re going through what your team is going through. If you have to do pay cuts, then you should take a pay cut. If you’re asking the team to work longer hours, then you should be working longer hours, too. There is no faster way to lose the respect of your troops than to say one thing and do another.

Listen to Everyone

Your team has more information than you do. The top only gets an aerial view. Everyone in the trenches knows more.
